Have you ever gotten tired on a hike and taken a break for a snack and realized you now had the strength to finish? That's the story behind Zuke's dog treats and chews.

Back in 1995, Patrick Meiering was on a hike in Colorado with his Chocolate Lab, Zuke, when he shared his energy bar with him to refuel so they could finish their trek. At that moment, he realized our dogs are just like us — they need healthy treats to keep them going, too.

Founded in Durango, Colorado, Patrick created Zuke’s treats, nutrient-rich and made in the USA with the Earth’s best ingredients.

Patrick researched nutrition and was soon grinding vitamin supplements into meat in his garage, and Zuke was his willing product tester. 

The trick was finding the right blend for sustained energy. He'd hand out samples to other hikers and their dogs to see how they performed and how well they liked the treats. Encouraged by the feedback, eventually, Patrick created dozens of more recipes.

Over the last 25 years, it's been an adventure learning the ins and outs of building a small business. Patrick taught himself coding to design his own website. He packaged his own products and got support from his friends and family and found investors. 

In the early days, it was deciding whether to sell the car to buy packaging or move into the office to save on rent. It was learning how to find the right people to employ and partner with and find the work-life balance of the trail.

Now Patrick has a successful company and sells millions of pounds of dog treats and supplements. But the success isn't just about selling healthy treats for dogs. It's about increasing the bond between pets and their humans and having a healthy "off-leash" lifestyle together.
