I have a thing for trivia. People around the office have a protocol of asking me first if there's some pointless piece of trivia that they happen to need. I'm always wondering things as a result of something else. This month, that something else is Thanksgiving. Were there any dogs munching on table scraps after that first Thanksgiving dinner?
I found an
old article on "The Mayflower Dogs," who were present at the founding of the Plymouth Colony. It seems there was a Springer Spaniel and a Mastiff, who seemed to get their owners in a great deal of trouble. They once took off after a deer, and their owners became lost trying to find them. When man and dog finally returned to camp, they were severely frostbitten from spending the night in fridid temperatures. One of the owners, John Goodman (any relation?), had to have his shoes cut off his feet because they were so swollen.
Later, the Springer Spaniel came upon a pair of wolves and ran back to Goodman with the wolves in hot pursuit. This left Goodman with the task of defending himself with only a stick, and barely able to walk.
So, not really directly having to do with Thanksgiving, but it's interesting trivia nonetheless. To me at least.
You can never get those brain cells back, by the way. Sorry.
