“You might not find meaning in disaster, but you might, with effort, make something useful of it.” - book jacket
If you are looking for a fabulous book, find A Three Dog Life by Abigail Thomas. It’s a quick-read, but not a “light” read by any means. It’s a touching story that weighs heavy on the heart and touches honestly on many tough subjects. The cover has an endorsement from Stephen King that kind of sums it up, “The best memoir I have ever read. This book is a punch to the heart. Read it.”
Abigail’s life was great, spending days with her husband, Rich, and their Beagle, Harry. Tragedy hits when Rich is struck by a car and suffers horrific skull and brain damage. Rich doesn’t return home to resume his life as it once was, instead he is sent to live in a facility where severe brain injuries are treated. He went from a happy man to one that had no recollection of the accident and often suffered from fits of rage and hallucinations.
This tragedy forces Abigail’s world upside-down, but a new world is eventually discovered. A new way of living, a new relationship with her beloved husband, a new place to call home, and a new family of three dogs. Her journey is one of courage, persistence, and honesty; where her dogs and knitting play a big part in her therapy and new way of life.
The book title is derived from tales of Australian Aborigines who slept with their dogs for warmth on cold nights. A “three dog night” being the coldest night.
