I woke up this morning to my dog's big, black, wet nose right between my eyes. Once he saw my eyes open, he ran around the bedroom and started whining and making funny noises. I sat up, trying to figure out why he was so awake and so happy (usually I wake him up). Then he stopped, stared at me, and proclaimed loudly, "Today is National Dog Day!"
That's right, today, August 26th, is National Dog Day! Started in 2004, this day is for celebrating our dogs and dogs everywhere...recognizing all the love and joy they bring to our lives. Dogs are such selfless animals and many dogs work hard in our society to make it a better place. Today is also dedicated to dogs that don't have homes yet, and National Dog Day encourages and honors dog ownership of any breed - mixed or pure.
National Dog Day was established by pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige. She felt there was a need to give dogs their own day! So, appreciate and love your pooch a little more today than yesterday.
How should you celebrate National Dog Day you ask? Well, consider adopting a dog from a local shelter, or if that isn't an option, you could donate a few bucks to help animal shelters. Maybe you can do what I did, and take your dog for a long walk. Take your dog to the park after work or give him a special treat (see my post earlier today for some ideas).
Enjoy the day and let your dogs know you appreciate them, and enjoy their unconditional love and loyalty!
