I think it's safe to say that creative dog grooming is the extreme sports of the dog grooming world. Creative dog grooming is defined as "cutting, dyeing, twisting and sculpting a dog's coat." It appears to be mainly poodle participants, as I'm guessing their coats are the easiest to manipulate. Though, I think a more appropriate name for it all would be Dogs in Disguise, or Humiliating Haircuts.
Groomers don't usually do these types of creations on client dogs, unless asked to, the art is usually reserved for shows and competitions. So, no need to avoid a "Creative" dog groomer's shop like the plague.
One creative dog groomer that shows up time and time again in the winner's circle at competitive grooming events is Sandy Hartness. Sandy unleashes her creativity on her dog, Cindy, a standard poodle. Cindy has graced the stage as many different animals and mythical creatures. It only takes a few hours to get the artsy-fartsy looks, and the dogs usually only remain in the stage makeup for a couple hours before being shaved. It definitely takes an artistic (or strange) mind to pull off these creations.
If you thought dog costumes were extreme, get a load of these poodles (photos were taken by Ren Netherland):

Call me crazy - actually call the groomer crazy - but this last dog looks pretty proud, even with rubber duckies glued to her rump.
