As is the case with dogs, there are many breeds of cats. Which ones are the most popular? I'm not talking about the large cats like panthers, even though they are pretty cool, I'm talking about domesticated house cat breeds. There are 41 breeds of cat recognized by the Cat Fancier's Association. The CFA is similar to the American Kennel Club for dogs, and the two often team up to raise awareness about dog and cat breeds and general care for animals (check out the joint Meet the Breeds event).
If you are a cat lover and have never seen Animal Planet's show Cats 101, I suggest you check it out. Each episode profiles different breeds of cats and tells you everything you need to know...encyclopedia style. The show covers all the details like care, grooming, personality traits, and common health issues of each breed. The following are the most popular cat breeds, according to Cats 101.
For more information and photos of each breed, watch the show or take a look at Cats 101 on Animal Planet's website.
American Shorthair
Himalayan
Siamese
Oriental
Ragdoll
Sphynx
Savannah
Maine Coon
Scottish Fold
Turkish Angora
My question now is what are the most popualr names for cats? Do you have a unique cat name?

Sep 29, 2009 at 2:49 PM As far as I'm concerned, you just can't beat the Ragdoll. They shed very little, very laid back and so loving. I'm about to buy one. My second favorite is the Munchkin because they paly like a kitten most of their life and so small and cute. I am also going to get on of these. :)
Oct 3, 2009 at 1:13 AM My cats have unique names... SPUMONI ("Moni" for short) is a gorgeous longhair tortoiseshell with tabby markings and green eyes. The reason I named her Spumoni is because the very first time I saw her she was 3 days old and reminded me of a scoop of spumoni ice cream! When we added another cat to our family, we decided to continue the Italian dessert theme. So we went with BISCOTTI. Scotti is a handsome longhair Siamese mix with blue eyes.
Mar 17, 2010 at 10:49 PM I Have 2 Syynx cats, one 9 months, and the other 1 1/2 years. They are the most social outgoing cat's I've ever interacted with. They're not afraid of people, dogs, or other animals, and will cuddle with anyone. They are social sweethearts and love to cuddle.
