Shopping at the grocery store this weekend, I stumbled across a glossy magazine with puppies all over the cover. After I oogled and googled at the adorable-worable puppies, I realized it was O, The Oprah Magazine. I am not usually picking that one up, but had to take a gander at the “dog issue”. The special issue devoted to dogs, was not without the slew of beauty tips, diet fads and Dr. Phil advice.
The few articles devoted to dogs, were interesting, yet scattered with articles about wildlife and sharing the earth with our “planetmates”. The articles that were actually about dogs covered a few writers’ personal relationships with their pets, dogs trained to sniff out cancer, and a feature on the crazy dog lady that was hoarding 300 dogs in her home (interesting read).
Oprah also wrote a small editorial piece about her personal experience adopting a puppy from PAWS Chicago, the city’s largest no-kill animal shelter. Oprah connected with one of the dogs, Sadie, while on the cover photo shoot for the June issue. She let the decision to adopt the pup weigh on her mind, and then the next day went back to the shelter to adopt Sadie into her family. Sadie was a blessing to Oprah’s life, but also faced a few struggles early in her puppy life.
This month's "O List", which lists some of Oprah's (and her magazine staff's) favorite things, also included some cool dog stuff.
