The envelope please... And the winner of the 2009 Cat Lady Award goes to... Wanda Oughton.
Wanda, a 62-year-old widow, was accused in March of keeping 150 cats in her New Jersey mansion. She recently plead guilty to multiple counts of animal cruelty and was ordered to pay more than $35,000 in fines and restitution.
Seriously, 150 cats in one house? That is just wrong!
Well, it gets worse...
When the cats were seized, the count was over 211 cats, and some of those were pregnant.
Wanda claimed that she knew there were too many cats, but she was "overwhelmed by the situation." She said that she loves animals and just didn't know how to take care of the situation.
Wanda was ordered to give up ownership of the cats, and was told she can not own more than 6 cats during the next three years. Also, all cats have to be spayed or neutered. Seems fair. At least she won't have to give up her title of "Cat Lady."
As for the cats, they are flooding a local shelter and are available for adoption (unless your name is Wanda).
