Have you ever wanted to give your dog a “special” treat, but have never been sure how to make a homemade dog meal other than kibble? I found a great cookbook of mouth-watering and drool-worthy recipes for dogs to be made by the humans that love them!
After trying (unsuccessfully) to make up my own dog treat recipe, which I named Mushy Mash, I decided to seek help. Walking around the book store, I stumbled on a display (actually I stubbed my toe...I’m pretty clumsy) of cookbooks, and like a message from above, there was the Three Dog Bakery Cookbook.
Back at home, in the kitchen, my dog and I sat on the floor near the sink (his favorite spot) and drooled over the recipes (with photos). My dog seemed especially interested in the “Hungry Mongrel Turkey Burgers,” but I decided that if I made those for him, he would demand scrumptious turkey burgers every night there-after. Plus, if he had those, even just once, chances are he might always give me that kinda-creepy-kinda-cute-hungry-puppy-dog-eye look every time I ate a burger.
So after weighing the options, I decided to go with something a little more simple. I made “Simple Simon’s Birthday Bones.” It wasn’t my dog’s birthday, but I figured he couldn’t read the words in the book, so no harm done. I didn’t have a bone shaped cookie cutter, but my Christmas tree cutter worked just fine as a substitute.
The four ingredients - flour, baking powder, peanut butter, and milk - made some yummy and crunchy dog biscuits (yes, I tasted one). I was pretty proud and I’m almost positive that my dog loves me more now than he did yesterday. He also made some new friends since we shared the biscuits with some of our neighborhood pups.
If you aren’t familiar with the story of Three Dog Bakery, familiarize yourself, you will be happy you did. The Three Dog Bakery Cookbook recipes will make any dog’s tail wag, and most of the recipes, you can enjoy with your dog. The cookbook has everything from casseroles and “Yappetizers” to cakes and cookies...all dog-friendly.
Do you have a simple homemade dog biscuit recipe? My dog would be happy to play in the kitchen again and taste test more homemade dog goodies.
