Meet the Breed: The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is pronounced "Puh-TEE Bah-SAY Gree-FOHN VON-day-uhn." You may prefer to call this pup a Small Vendeen Basset, or simply the PBGV (though that sounds a bit like an exotic gluten-free version of a peanut butter sandwich.)
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a small, sturdy, low-to-the-ground scent hound. He's about 50% longer than he is tall. The face features shaggy eyebrows, a mustache and a beard. The eyes are large and dark. The nose is large with wide nostrils. The ears are oval, long, and also shaggy. The coat is double, wiry and the overall appearance is casual and care-free. The coat is white with spots that can be orange, lemon, black, grizzle, or tan. The tail is covered in long fur that tapers to the tip, resembling a saber.
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen originates in France and was used to hunt hares in the rough underbrush. Although called a small basset, this dog is not related to the more commonly recognized Basset Hound. Instead, it has been bred down from the larger Grand Basset Griffon. This breed can be traced back to the 16th century and is quite popular in France, though rare in the US. A Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen named Jilly won the Crufts 2013, beating out over 20,000 dogs to win the coveted title.
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a cheerful, friendly, good-natured dog that is intelligent and self assured. Though casual in appearance, the dog is alert and always ready for exploring. Like many scent hounds, they can be willful, particularly when locked on a scent. This bright, active dog will find his own entertainment when not given the proper outlets, which could lead to destructive behavior. Good with children and generally friendly towards strangers. Should not be let off leash as this dog will take off after a scent. The PBGV likes to dig and chew.
