October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!

Marty is an adoptable young Yorkie in NY, NY! Visit his link on Petfinder.com to find out more about him.

It's our favorite time of year! Not only is October so much fun because we get to celebrate Dogtober with costume themes for dressing pets, but October is also Adopt a Shelter Pet month!

How can I help?

The obvious answer is to adopt a shelter dog! Many rescues offer adoption specials during the month of October to make adopting a pet more affordable. Consider making a donation to your shelter with your savings, which could also be a tax deduction. Encourage your friends and family to adopt instead of shop, because there are several adorable dogs just waiting for their furever home! You can find virtually any breed that you might otherwise shop for. For instance...

Max the Maltese

Max is a 3-year-old Maltese in Sherman Oaks, CA. Visit Petfinder.com to adopt him.

What if I can't adopt?

There are several things you can do to help homeless animals if you're not able to adopt.

  1. Love the ones you've got. It's really okay not to adopt another pet if you already have a house full. In fact, it's better to take care of a few pets well than struggle to care for too many. (I have to remind myself of this regularly!) This includes staying up to date on your pets' dental and medical care. Consider getting pet insurance. Are your pets wearing ID? Be sure your pets have tags and a microchip so they don't become a shelter pet.
  2. Help your local shelter. Shelters are always looking for volunteers for walking dogs and for fostering. Just ask! Perhaps they need canned foods or toys donated. If your shelter's needs are great, post a list at work and have a "puppy shower" to get coworkers excited about helping out.
  3. Get the word out. Use your social media sites to remind people about Adopt a Shelter Month. Facebook, Twitter and your personal blogs are always great places to remind your connections about the importance of adopting.
