Today is National Puppy Day!

main image

National Puppy Day is a day to celebrate the unconditional love that puppies (and grown pups) provide as companions.

It's also a day to educate the public of the need to adopt shelter dogs rather than shop for puppies at pet stores that get their animals from puppy mills.

Adopt Cher

Puppy mills are breeding organizations that view dogs simply as an income opportunity and do not take the well being of these animals into consideration. Imagine spending your whole life in a cage in unsanitary conditions, your paws damaged from living on wires. This is the life of a puppy mill mother.

Adopt Juliet

Meet Juliet, former puppy mill mother

62. That was me, that was my name before I came to rescue. Now I have a beautiful name, Juliet. Female Italian Greyhound born 10/20/2006. My foster family says that I am such a sweet soul, but I definitely have been "shut down" in order to cope with survival in captivity. I am still very skittish to this day and will flee if given the opportunity at a moments notice. I initially was so afraid that it appeared that I had no interest in discovering the world outside a small cage. My eyes seemed to be half closed and I would trip over many things as if I were afraid to really look at the world around me.

Good news to report, I have shifted my focus to discovering the world and all of the things about living in a home environment. I will even make eye contact now with my foster Mom and take treats from her hand. She has been very patient with me and allowed me to come to her in my own time when I felt secure enough to do so. Learn more about Juliet's story here.

It's not just the mamma mill dogs that suffer

Puppies born in this squalor are also often sick. Therfore, buying a puppy from a pet store is risky from a vet bill standpoint and also continues to support the puppy mill industry.

Celebrate National Puppy Day!

There are several ways to celebrate this wonderful holiday:

  • Adopt a shelter pet
  • Donate to a rescue or shelter
  • Become a foster pet parent
  • Have your own pet spayed or neutered
  • Tell a friend why they should adopt rather than shop for a dog
  • Post an adoptable pet profile on your social media sites
  • Love on your own pets

Juliet is absolutely beautiful. The photo really conveys her inner beauty as well. I would be sorely tempted if I didn't live in CA and hadn't just adopted a puppy. I know she'll soon find a loving forever home and continue to blossom. Thanks for sharing her story and helping connect her with a loving home. Also thanks to her foster mom for making it all possible.

Thanks to all the foster parents, and rescuers that work 24/7 to make it possible to save some of these abused dogs and cats. Their patience, love, and caring is the greatest gift to these tormented souls. I have always donated to rescues, (especially to dachshund rescues, since I have two)! Great humans...Best of luck and prayers for Juliet, she does look so soft and beautiful...a great example of her breed! Kisses to you, Juliet and your humans :)
