Football Parties Are So Yesterday...

main image

As noted in a recent blog, the best part of the Superbowl is the commercials, specifically commercials with€¦ drum roll please €¦DOGS! So instead of just having a so-so party staring at brutes chasing around a pig skin, why not host a party and watch mankinds best friend ? And there is never so much excitement and drama as at the Westminster Dog Show! In case youre living under a rock, let me give you a bit of background on the yearly event:

The Westminster Dog Show takes place at Madison Square Gardens in New York City. Beginning in 1877, this highly-anticipated occasion is the United States second-longest-running annual sporting event, with the Kentucky Derby being the first.  This event has worldwide appeal with more than 700 press passes issued to people attending from more than 20 countries. Additionally, the Westminster Kennel Club website has millions of visitors yearly from around the world (about 12 million page views by users from more than 170 countries).

You have two dates to choose for hosting your party. Better yet, consider recording it to give your party goers weekend flexibility:

Monday, February 13 Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding Groups 8-9 p.m. (ET) live on USA Network 9-11 p.m. (ET) live on CNBC

Tuesday, February 14 Sporting, Working and Terrier Groups, Best In Show (This is Baxter's personal favorite!) 8-11 p.m. (ET) live on USA Network

On Valentine's Day?

Yes, we realize that this last evening may conflict with your loved-ones romantic plans, but when he/she leaves, who will still be there? Eh hem€¦ Do I even have to say it? Save yourself the heartache and spend the evening with your dog!

But, if youd prefer to make a big weekend to-do about it, thereby appeasing both of the loves in your life, here are some ideas to make your dog-themed party a success.

First, compile a list of other dog lovers. Decide if youd prefer to include their pets as well, if you know if your dogs all get along (like youve already spent time together at the doggy park.) If you do plan to invite owners and dogs, keep the guest list small to minimize chaos for yourself and all guests.

For those of you who are crafty, consider using paper art for something like this:

For the computer savvy, you could modify Evite Academy- Awards invitations for something classy or any of their dog-themed options. Or you could use some of the free dog clip art available to create your own printable invitations.

No party is complete without dog-themed food. We suggest anything wrapped in bacon, i.e., scallops baked with BBQ sauce. Little Smokies are always a treat. You can throw some in a crock pot with a bottle of your favorite sauce€¦either honey mustard, BBQ, or be daring and try a raspberry chipotle. Meatballs double as snacks and toys! Dogs in a blanket (hot dogs or smokies wrapped in refrigerated crescent roll strips are also recommended. Try frosted bone-shaped sugar cookies. You could research homemade baked dog treats or just throw some store-bought ones in a cute bowl.

Doggie bag take-home treats

Label white lunch bags and fill them with cute doggie toys that can be found at your local dollar store. Dog edibles will always be appreciated by your pet-loving guests.  Of course, is always here to serve your gift-giving needs!

We hope these ideas will get your noggin noodling to the endless possibilities towards creating a fabulous dog-show party. It sure beats those other stale sporting-event-themed parties.
