Potassium Citrate ER Tablets

Potassium citrate is used to treat kidney stone conditions by increasing the urinary pH.

Possible side effects may include muscular weakness, stomach disturbances, heart disturbances. Notify your veterinarian if side effects are noted and they are troublesome.

Potassium Citrate tablets should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian. The tablets should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed and the pet is to not be allowed to chew the tablets. Try to give this medication at about the same time each day.

Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. The following drugs can potentially interact with potassium citrate: angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, spironolactone, digitalis, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, anticholinergic agents, glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, cyclosporine, and ACTH. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together. Store this medicine in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Store away from heat and direct sunlight. Do not store this medicine in the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in damp places. The medicine may break down if exposed to heat or moisture.

Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.
