Salix (furosemide) 12.5 mg x 500 tablets

Salix is a diuretic that works by blocking the absorption of salt and fluid in the kidneys causing an increase in urine output, helping reduce the amount of water in the body. Salix is an effective diuretic possessing a wide therapeutic range. Pharmacologically it promotes the rapid removal of abnormally retained extracellular fluids. The rationale for the efficacious use of diuretic therapy is determined by the clinical pathology producing the edema. 

Dogs and Cats

Salix is indicated for the treatment of edema, (pulmonary congestion, ascites) associated with cardiac insufficiency and acute noninflammatory tissue edema.

Side effects may include excessive thirst, drowsiness, weakness, restlessness, diminished urination in relation to fluid intake, stomach upset, or a fast heart rate. Notify your veterinarian if side effects are noted and they are troublesome.

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Salix should be given orally as directed by your veterinarian.

Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. The following drugs can potentially interact with furosemide: theophylline, aminoglycoside antibiotics, corticosteroids, corticotropin, amphotericin B, aspirin, tubocurarine, succinylcholine, probenecid, sulfinpyrazone, and insulin. Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.

Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform Pets Choice and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.
