Fun Autumn Activities for You and Your Dog to Do

There are only certain activities you can do with your dog during the summer. The intense heat makes it tough to do certain things in the middle of the day. After all, you do not want to put your pooch at risk of overheating.

Now that autumn is here, things are beginning to cool down. The sidewalk will not be as hot, so you do not have to wait until the sun goes down before taking your dog on a walk. However, there are plenty of other fun things to do, and you can have some great experiences with your family and the dog.

Go on a Nature Hike

Early in the morning, you can put a leash on your pooch and head out to some local trails. It does not have to be particularly long. In fact, if you have an older dog, then it may be best if you can keep it to less than a mile. However, your dog is definitely going to enjoy the new scents. You may not go hiking too often, but it is good to break out of routine once in a while. This allows your dog to receive some new scents other than those around your neighborhood.

Go on a Little Day Trip

Autumn means there is only a couple weeks until the kids are back in school. Not many people are vacationing as they would in June or July, so this can be a great opportunity to put your doggie in a crate and head out on a small vacation. You do not have to go very far. You can go to a nearby town that is only a couple hours away just for a chance in scenery. You get a chance to do some exploring, and you should make sure to find a dog-friendly hotel, so you can spend the night.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

With Halloween right around the corner, chances are good some pumpkin patches are going to be popping up. Instead of simply heading over to a patch to pick up a pumpkin and leave, you can make an event out of it. Take your pooch with you. Most patches are more than willing to accommodate, but you should make sure to double-check before heading out. Your dog may even help you find the perfect pumpkin to turn into a jack-o’-lantern.

Check Out an Apple Orchard

Another fun autumn activity is to go to an apple orchard. This is a popular activity with couples, but regardless of your marital status, you should take your pup with you. Again, this is a great way to introduce your pooch to some new smells. Your dog will also likely enjoy munching on some apples during the excursion. However, you should cut up an apple into slices before giving them to a dog. The reason is that the seeds and core can be choking hazards.

Enjoy an Off-Season Destination

Beaches are obviously crowded during the summer. They tend to clear out once autumn starts, and if you live relatively close to one, then this may be a great time for you to head over. Bring a Frisbee or another one of your dog’s favorite toys and play a game of fetch. With fewer people, you do not have to worry about your dog running into anyone or being a nuisance.

Camp for a Weekend

There is nothing like unplugging for a weekend and heading out on a camping trip. Whether you go with your family, friends or just your dog, it is a great way to reconnect with nature. Make sure you pack up everything you need for an enjoyable weekend. That involves plenty of food for both you and the dog. You also want to make sure you have plenty of water and a first aid kit. You also want to have plenty of treats on-hand for when your dog is a good boy for handling a new experience well.

Create Big Piles of Leaves

A big part of the autumn season is the leaves falling off of trees. To keep your lawn looking great, you want to rake these leaves up, but before you get rid of them entirely, it can be good to have some fun. Rake all the leaves together in one big pile. As you are doing this, you may want to keep your pup inside the house so that it does not get in the way. Once the pile is complete, let your dog loose. It will enjoy having some fun, and you should make sure to videotape the entire experience.

Trick-or-Treat

If you have kids, then there is nothing quite like watching them dress up in their costumes and go trick-or-treating. Your children do not have to be the only ones in on the fun. Get a fun Halloween costume for your dog, and have it go trick-or-treating with the kids. You just need to make sure your dog does not indulge in any candy while it is out.

Attend Outdoor Festivals

Many events take place during the fall due to the colder weather. Look up any events taking place in your city. Many towns have block parties or fairs during this time of year. Most of the time, these are dog-friendly affairs.

Stay Inside

If you are at a loss for what to do, sometimes there is nothing better than curling up with a good book or some television. Make sure you wrap your dog up in a blanket in case it gets too cold. You can make yourself some hot cocoa, and you can provide plenty of tasty treats for your pup. Some much-needed relaxation may be just what you and your dog need after a long day.

At the end of the day, it really does not matter what you and your dog do together. As long as you are spending time together and are enjoying one another’s company, that is all you need. Even just going on walks and playing in the background can be memorable experiences. Autumn can just be the beginning of your doggie adventures.
