Trazodone HCL tablets may be prescribed for adjunctive treatment of behavioral disorders (anxiety or phobia related) in dogs.

Trazodone HCL tablets can be dosed either regularly or on an as-needed basis.

Side effects associated with Trazodone include lethargy, sedation, staggering, vomiting, diarrhea, panting, hyperactivity, shaking, restlessness, and/or agitation. Side effects will generally improve with time so may veterinarians recommend waiting a few days to determine response if the side effects are mild.

Other side effects may occur. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian.

Trazodone should be administered as directed by your veterinarian.

This medication does not have an FDA approved indication for use in animals, but it is a common and acceptable practice for veterinarians to prescribe this human medication for use in animals. Use with caution in pets with a history of liver, kidney, or heart disease.

Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication or supplements you are giving to your animal. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, even if a drug interaction may occur. The following drugs can potentially interact with trazodone: antihypertensive drugs, aspirin, antifungals, CNS depressants, digoxin, MAO inhibitors, metoclopramide, NSAIDS, phenothiazines, SSRI antidepressants. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your animal more closely. Contact your veterinarian if your animal experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.

Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic. Symptoms may include but are not limited to: swollen lips, tongue, face, airways; difficulty breathing; agitation; profuse salivation; vomiting; widespread hives and itching.
