Zycortal Suspension is given subcutaneously (under the skin) in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison's disease).

Benefits

Helps to regulate many bodily functions such as metabolism, blood pressure, and stress response in canines affected by Addison's Disease (hypoadrenocorticism). Replaces mineralcorticoid hormones in dogs only.

Active Ingredients

Desoxycorticosterone pivalate

Usage

Give as recommended by your veterinarian.  Doses are tailored to each dog's individual response, continued laboratory testing is required to ensure correct dose. Shake thoroughly prior to each use to resuspend the product.

  • Injectable medications require needles and syringes.  Those items are purchased separately.  Please ask your veterinarian for a recommendation for the correct needle/syringe sizes for your pet.

Side Effects

May see irritation or pain at the injection site, characterized by swelling and redness.  If given at too low of a dose, may see signs of Addisons disease (weakness, depression, lack of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea). If given at too high of a dose may see increased thirst and urination, and edema (swelling, fluid accumulation in the limbs). If you observe any of these signs in your pet, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Cautions

Not for use in humans. Keep out of reach of children.  Store at controlled room temperature.  Do not freeze. Use within 120 days of first puncture.

Not for use in animals hypersensitive (allergic) to it or drugs similar to it.

Do not use in pregnant or lactating animals (female animals nursing their young). Do not use in patients with congestive heart failure, kidney disease, primary hepatic failure, or edema (swelling). Do NOT give DOCP intravenously (IV, into the vein).

Consult with your veterinarian regarding the physical examinations and laboratory testing necessary prior to and during treatment with DOCP.

Make sure to tell your veterinarian what other medication you are giving to your pet. Quite often your veterinarian may prescribe two different medications, and a drug interaction may be anticipated. In this case, your veterinarian may vary the dose and/or monitor your pet more closely. The following drugs can potentially interact with ZYCORTAL Suspension: spironolactone (may reduce effectiveness of ZYCORTAL Suspension), furosemide, thiazide diuretics, digoxin, insulin, and aspirin.  Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.

Allergic reactions to medications may occur. Be sure to inform VetSource and your veterinarian if your pet has any known drug sensitivities or allergies. If your pet experiences an allergic reaction to the medication, signs may include facial swelling, hives, scratching, sudden onset of diarrhea, vomiting, shock, seizures, pale gums, cold limbs, or coma. If your pet displays symptoms of an allergic reaction, call your veterinarian immediately or go to a veterinary emergency clinic.
